“Toad on the Road” l Currently in Production

Amphibians in Switzerland but also world wide are declining rapidly due to a manifold of reasons. A crucial moment is the amphibian migration, where many become victims of busy roads.

"Toad on the Road" tells the story of a common toad on its sojourn to the spawning grounds and brings cinematic visuals into the classroom. Together with teaching material this film aims to sensitize students to the loss of biodiversity on our doorstep and show possible solutions.

This Project is a collaboration with Thomas Klaper and DP Roman Willi.

Bottom Up - Dr. Wanja Nyingi on Changes needed in Conservation

A plea for a change in the way conservation projects are conducted in Kenya and the role science plays. Renowned ichthyologist Wanja Nyingi advocates for true bottom up, community-driven conservation. With her approach, scientists can benefit from local indigenous knowledge and in return empower communities by providing them with information to take decisions, for example regarding wetland management.

Amphipod.ch l EAWAG - A miraculous increase in biodiversity

The team of the Altermatt lab has taken on the challenge to do a comprehensive study about amphipods in Switzerland. This included sampling in lakes and rivers but also caves and ground water. They found several new, previously unknown, amphipod species and published a book and an online application to make the knowledge gained readily available for science and practical conservation work.

Documentary: Lachs - quo vadis? l Kristof Reuther & Jonas Steiner

A film about the reintroduction of salmon in Germany & Switzerland in the context of the year of the salmon 2019. This once common fish in Germany is nowadays only known from the supermarket. This is without doubt also due to the fact that the stocks collapsed in the Rhine in the 20th century when it became completely extinct. After the notorious chemical accident "Schweizerhalle" in 1986, it was decided to restore the Rhine after decades of river corrections, shipping, and hydroelectric power exploitation. Through its popularity, the Atlantic salmon represents an "umberella species" and thanks to its high demands, it repeatedly points out problem areas that still remain. In order to strengthen the stocks again, many volunteers, clubs and associations are working on its reintroduction. We have accompanied them and learned what has been achieved so far and where there are still problems to be solved.
